Who's Pete?

Here's how it all started

From a phone call about an adventure race to an electrolyte candy made in Melbourne.

Peter Robertson. Grew up in Glen Waverley, Melbourne, and still local to the south east suburbs. Trail runner, hiker, Kelpie owner and founder of Race Camp.

Where it started: a phone call from Mike

It starts with a good PT friend named Mike. One day he called me and said, "Hey, want to join me on an adventure race?" I said yes, with no clue that kayaking 4km up and down rapids, cycling 64km and running a half marathon up Mt Baw Baw with no training was a bad idea.

It was a long day, and I loved being out there.

    2. Mt Bogong

My first trail run, in hiking boots

Mike kicked off my passion for the outdoors. We hiked all over Victoria, and my first big one was Mt Bogong. Coming back down I had a burst of energy on the Spur track, and Mike said if I had something left in the tank I should go for a trail run. So I did.

My first ever trail run, in hiking boots. All the wrong gear, but I enjoyed it enough to take up running as a hobby.

Between Mike and Harley, the routine was set

I also had a pup named Harley, a Kelpie, who I've had since September 2020. Sheep dogs need a lot of running, more than I was doing at the time, so I adapted and started running regular 5km and 8km loops with him.

Between Mike and Harley, the routine was set: weekday loops with Harley, and weekends out with Mike, hiking Mt Bogong and Feathertop back to back over two days.

Harley is six now. You'll see him at any booth he's allowed into. He loves a pat and will happily give you a fist bump.

    4. San Francisco

A slow run on supermarket sushi

Running became a regular weekend thing. In 2024 I visited my brother Dave in San Francisco, and wandering around Palo Alto I decided to go for a long run, setting off at 4pm on nothing but supermarket sushi and a can of energy drink. Not a fuelling plan I'd recommend.

Where the candy idea came from

Pictured: Rory and me making the first batch that actually tasted good. Every attempt before it went back to the drawing board.

In 2025 I signed up for the Surf Coast Century, mostly for a good excuse to spend a long day on the coast trails, with Steve Brennan of Weapon Run Coaching helping me with a training plan.

What I struggled with most was not food but electrolyte balance. I bought a product I thought was helping, and it turned out to be mostly expensive salt, and not what I needed. The idea for an electrolyte candy came from that day at Anglesea.

Bringing a flavour to the table

My background is in e-commerce and FMCG, so the web side of the business and the logistics of getting product to people come naturally to me. With help from my friend Rory at Patina Technologies and the support of my family, I set out to make something that lets me and others enjoy the outdoors and keep going for longer, at a fair price, and that actually tastes good.

That is Race Camp, and an electrolyte candy is the first thing we're making.

Take some for the run, then share the bag with your mates at the finish. That's the Race Camp way.
A thank you

Steve Brennan, Weapon Run Coaching

A big thank you to Steve, who put together my training for the Surf Coast Century and kept it enjoyable. If you're after a coach, he's well worth a chat.
